Descendants
Relations are counted along the shortest line of descent. The rows in the diagram follow the order of crosses, so a variety with more than one path down can sit lower in the diagram than its relation here suggests.
One character is wrong in the opening line
"Paddy Rice Hokuriku No.103" was crossed in 1937 in the Ministry-designated paddy rice breeding trial at the Kamikawa Branch of the Hokkaido Agricultural Experiment Station, taking "Paddy Rice Norin No.1" as the mother and "Paddy Rice Norin No.19" (Hokkai No.79) as the father
"Hokuriku No.103." The breeding site is the Kamikawa Branch of the Hokkaido Agricultural Experiment Station and the line name is Hokkai No.103. Where it should read Hokkai it reads Hokuriku.
This was wrong on the paper report itself. After Hatsunishiki's "Ou No.244" (correctly 224) and Tedoriwase's "Etsunan No.5" (correctly No.6), this is the third.
It is quoted as it stands. Where a source goes wrong is material for deciding how to read it. All three are mistakes in a number or a symbol — not in a description of character or of a year.
The third case of Norin No.1 as the mother
The mother is Paddy Rice Norin No.1, the father Paddy Rice Norin No.19 (Hokkai No.79). Both carry Norin numbers, and the mother is Norin No.1.
On this site Norin No.1 appears on the mother's side in Paddy Rice Aiko No.2 (1931), Paddy Rice Fujisaka No.4, and now this — three cases. Nine documents put it on the father's side.
They do not divide by year, nor by place. Aiko No.2 is 1931 with it as mother; Paddy Rice Norin No.21 is the same 1931 with it as father. Within what this site can see, there is no rule to find.
The provisional name was nothing but a number
In 1942 it was given the provisional name "1735", and in 1945 the line name "Hokkai No.103"
"1735." For a time, before the line name, it carried a provisional name that was only a number.
NARO's listing holds 116 varieties that were named while having no regional number. One of them is "1718". The same four-digit way of numbering.
The character set out under kanji numerals
One. Its maturity is later than "Paddy Rice Norin No.20"'s but earlier than "Fukoku"'s, corresponding to the late-early class. Three. Both its resistance to cold-weather damage and its resistance to cold water are stronger than "Paddy Rice Norin No.20"'s. Five. Its lodging resistance is weaker than "Paddy Rice Norin No.20"'s, about that of "Paddy Rice Norin No.28". Seven. The grain is medium in size, quality "upper-middle", with somewhat frequent white belly, somewhat inferior to "Paddy Rice Norin No.20"'s.
Numbered one to seven, in kanji numerals.
Natsuminori used headings with explanations, Yamaseshirazu a list of fields, Mutsukogane the Western calendar. This makes a fourth format.
Five of the seven items compare it with Paddy Rice Norin No.20. Norin No.20 (Hokkai No.86) is also a child of Norin No.1 — so it keeps measuring itself against a half sibling.
Item five's comparison, Paddy Rice Norin No.28 (Hokkai No.89), has no historical document. The shape here is a document referring to a variety whose own record the database does not hold.
Made to replace a half sibling
From the characters above, this line suits cultivation as a cold-tolerant variety in place of "Paddy Rice Norin No.20" in the districts where that variety is grown and yet is prone to cold-weather damage — that is, in the very-early and earliest-variety districts
In place of Norin No.20.
Norin No.20 is a child of Norin No.1 and was Hokkaido's very-early variety. Where it met cold damage, another child of the same parent steps in to replace it.
The same shape as Wakakusa, made to fix Tarehonami's sprouting. A half sibling's weakness is filled in by a half sibling.

How the seed parent of Norin No.1 is written
- Moritawase, written 森多早生 — イネ品種データベース検索システム 交配系譜図「北陸4号」
- Moritawase, written 森田早稲 — イネ品種データベース検索システム「北陸4号(水稲農林1号)」品種来歴文書
The two spellings appear in the same NARO database, in the pedigree field and in the historical document respectively. We use the pedigree field's spelling and list the other.
How Kamenoo No.4 is written
- 亀の尾4号 — イネ品種データベース検索システム 交配系譜図「陸羽132号」
- 亀ノ尾4号 (the common spelling)
We follow the NARO database. The commonly seen spelling uses a katakana no; we prefer the spelling we can cite.
On naming
Variety names are proper nouns. We use a name in this language only where a published source for it can be cited; otherwise the Japanese name stands.
What we have not yet confirmed
We have not looked below the top twenty
The site covers the twenty most widely planted varieties of the 2024 crop and the varieties that connect them back to Koshihikari. Many descendants exist below that line; we have not yet verified them against primary sources.
The year Masshigura was crossed
Neither Aomori Prefecture's table of recommended-variety characteristics nor the NARO database gives the year Masshigura (Aokei No.138) was crossed. The cross itself, Ou No.341 / Yamagata No.40, and its adoption as a recommended variety in fiscal 2004 are confirmed from primary sources; the year of the cross is not. For the same reason we do not say which parent was the seed parent. On 8 October 2026 we went back to the breeder's own side. The Masshigura page in the variety database of the Aomori Prefectural Industrial Technology Research Center's Agriculture and Forestry Research Institute carries a heading reading “The origin of Masshigura” — with nothing under it. Of the institute's bulletins, only No.42 (2015) onward are online, and the issue that would hold the breeding report for Masshigura is not among them. So the year of the cross is absent from the breeder's own published material as well.
