Descendants
Relations are counted along the shortest line of descent. The rows in the diagram follow the order of crosses, so a variety with more than one path down can sit lower in the diagram than its relation here suggests.

Kinki No.35 is the later Norin No.23
At the Konosu Testing Site of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry Agricultural Experiment Station, an artificial cross was made in 1943 taking "Kinki No.35", later Norin No.23, as the mother and "Norin No.1" as the father
"Kinki No.35", later Norin No.23. One sentence ties the line name to the Norin number.
At the time of the cross it was Kinki No.35; by the time the document was written it had become Norin No.23. Koshihikari's mother was likewise Kinki No.34 at the cross and Norin No.22 afterwards. This is why building a pedigree from variety names alone trips you up.
The father is Norin No.1. The cross was made in 1943, the year before Koshihikari's.
A prefecture counting off Norin No.1's weaknesses
Giving Ishikawa's reason for wanting it, the document sets out where Norin No.1 stopped.
"Norin No.1", which occupies % of Ishikawa's paddy area, has a great many excellent traits, but its blast resistance is somewhat weak and it lodges somewhat easily, so growing it in districts where blast is endemic is extremely difficult.
The share of planted area is left as a blank. Whether it was never written or was lost, we cannot tell.
The document then records that the earlier replacement had not been enough either.
"Kaganishiki", adopted as a recommended variety in 1950, gradually increased its area and reached 20 cho by 1952, but while its blast resistance is slightly stronger than "Norin No.1"'s, its thin and somewhat long culm is not strong and it lodges easily; its fertiliser tolerance is weak, making it unsuited to fertile land and heavy fertilisation, and its grain quality is also somewhat inferior.
Put in one replacement and another defect appears. So the next one is needed. That repetition is what the pedigree diagram actually records.
The document gets its own name wrong
The conclusion of the Ishikawa section opens like this:
However "Etsunan No.5" is a slightly short-culmed, panicle-number-type early non-glutinous variety ripening about when "Norin No.1" does
This is the document for Etsunan No.6, and it says Etsunan No.5. The surrounding description matches Etsunan No.6.
The document does not say which is the error, so it is left uncorrected and noted. The historical document for Hatsunishiki carries the same kind of discrepancy.
It became Chidori's mother
Ten years later Tedoriwase became the mother of Chidori. The partner was Norin No.22 — Koshihikari's mother.
Norin No.22 crossed onto Tedoriwase, a child of Norin No.1. The same two varieties that made Koshihikari meet again, one generation out of step.

How the seed parent of Norin No.1 is written
- Moritawase, written 森多早生 — イネ品種データベース検索システム 交配系譜図「北陸4号」
- Moritawase, written 森田早稲 — イネ品種データベース検索システム「北陸4号(水稲農林1号)」品種来歴文書
The two spellings appear in the same NARO database, in the pedigree field and in the historical document respectively. We use the pedigree field's spelling and list the other.
How Kamenoo No.4 is written
- 亀の尾4号 — イネ品種データベース検索システム 交配系譜図「陸羽132号」
- 亀ノ尾4号 (the common spelling)
We follow the NARO database. The commonly seen spelling uses a katakana no; we prefer the spelling we can cite.
On naming
Variety names are proper nouns. We use a name in this language only where a published source for it can be cited; otherwise the Japanese name stands.
What we have not yet confirmed
We have not looked below the top twenty
The site covers the twenty most widely planted varieties of the 2024 crop and the varieties that connect them back to Koshihikari. Many descendants exist below that line; we have not yet verified them against primary sources.
The year Masshigura was crossed
Neither Aomori Prefecture's table of recommended-variety characteristics nor the NARO database gives the year Masshigura (Aokei No.138) was crossed. The cross itself, Ou No.341 / Yamagata No.40, and its adoption as a recommended variety in fiscal 2004 are confirmed from primary sources; the year of the cross is not. For the same reason we do not say which parent was the seed parent. On 8 October 2026 we went back to the breeder's own side. The Masshigura page in the variety database of the Aomori Prefectural Industrial Technology Research Center's Agriculture and Forestry Research Institute carries a heading reading “The origin of Masshigura” — with nothing under it. Of the institute's bulletins, only No.42 (2015) onward are online, and the issue that would hold the breeding report for Masshigura is not among them. So the year of the cross is absent from the breeder's own published material as well.
