The way up to Koshihikari

Seven records survive on Koshihikari's ancestral side: six crosses and one pure-line selection, listed from the oldest generation down to Koshihikari. Each has a primary source. From a landrace to Koshihikari is two crosses by the short path and three by the long one.

At the top are landraces. Landraces have no breeding report, so they have no page of their own. For varieties from before the registration system began in 1978, only those whose Norin-number reports were digitised can be read. Paddy Rice Norin No.22, Rikuu No.132 and Rikuu No.20 have no historical document; only the record of the cross combination remains.

13 ancestors appear here, reached through 6 crosses and 1 pure-line selection. Going back, the father's side runs from Rikuu 132 to Rikuu 20 and Kamenoo 4, and Rikuu 20 further to Aikoku; the mother's side runs from Norin 8 to Ginbouzu and Asahi, and stops there. For seven of them — Moritawase, Ginbouzu, Asahi, Joushuu, Senichi, Kamenoo 4 and Aikoku — there is no record of a cross at all. The order on this page is depth in the pedigree, not year of crossing: Norin 22 has no recorded year, so ordering by year would put a mother below her child and reverse the shape of the tree.
