Everything from the same cross as Koshihikari

From one cross made in 1944 at the Niigata Prefectural Agricultural Experiment Station — Norin No.22 / Norin No.1 — eleven lines are on record. Five received variety names. One of those five is Koshihikari.

Seed from the one cross was split between Fukui and Tohoku and selected separately in each. Honenwase and Koshijiwase came from the Fukui side, Hatsunishiki and Yamasenishiki from the Tohoku side. The generations spent fixing them differ too: Hatsunishiki stood at F8 in 1953, Yamasenishiki at F16 in 1961.

Of the eleven lines from this one cross, only five were given variety names: Honenwase, Koshihikari, Hatsunishiki, Yamasenishiki and Koshijiwase. The other six ended as line numbers, Yo-44 through Yo-49, and no breeding report was written for them. Reports were produced only for lines that received a name, so lines from the same parents in the same year survive in two different ways. For the six unnamed ones, all that can be known is that a row for them exists in the parent's list of offspring.
