Yamaseshirazu

Parents: Fujisaka No.2 and Norin No.1. The sources do not state which was the seed parent and which the pollen parent. Crossed in 1946. Bred by Tohoku Branch, National Agricultural Experiment Station → MAF Furukawa → Furukawa Branch, Miyagi Prefectural.

The diagram shows this variety's own parents and the line that connects it to Koshihikari. Among the descendants only the main varieties are drawn; the other parent of each cross, and every descendant not drawn here, are listed in full below. Faint boxes are unnamed breeding lines.

Parents

Descendants

Relations are counted along the shortest line of descent. The rows in the diagram follow the order of crosses, so a variety with more than one path down can sit lower in the diagram than its relation here suggests.

This document alone does not say mother or father

The other historical documents write "taking A as the mother and B as the father in an artificial cross". Yamaseshirazu's does not.

Cross combination "Paddy Rice Fujisaka No.2" × "Paddy Rice Norin No.1" Year and place of cross 1946, Tohoku Branch, MAF Agricultural Experiment Station (now Cultivation Section One, Tohoku Agricultural Experiment Station) Breeding site (from F3) MAF Furukawa Agricultural Improvement Laboratory, then Furukawa Branch, Miyagi Prefectural Agricultural Experiment Station Year of line naming February 1954, Tohoku No.63 Current generation F12 (fiscal 1958)

It is a list of fields, with the parents joined by "×" and nothing more. The words for seed parent and pollen parent are absent.

By convention what precedes the "×" is the mother. But this site does not assert what is not written in words. Which of Fujisaka No.2 and Norin No.1 was the mother is recorded here as not stated.

For the same combination of parents, Tohoku No.58 Natsuminori's document writes "taking Higashiyama No.38 as the mother and Paddy Rice Norin No.1 as the father" in words. Same station, lines five years apart, and the way of writing changed.

An unreadable character survives in it

Awn and ? apiculus colour Awnless, and the ? apiculus is red.

"? apiculus" — the colour of the tip of the husk.

That missing character is not unique to this document. The same part of the grain is written four different ways across the database:

Spelling Documents
ふ先 Natsuminori (Tohoku No.58)
桴先 Wakakusa (Etsunan No.39)
?先 Yamaseshirazu (Tohoku No.63), Wakasa (Etsunan No.15), Yamahonami (Etsunan No.18)

The "?" is not one accident but a habit of the digitisation. The paper original probably used a character such as 稃 that the transcription could not render; since there is no telling which, it is quoted as it stands.

Flaws a source carries about itself come in kinds. Hatsunishiki's document writes "Ou No.244" once where the number is 224, and Tedoriwase's writes "Etsunan No.5" where it is No.6 — those were wrong on the paper report itself. This "?先" was lost on the way from paper to screen. One is an error in the source, the other damage to it. Both are left uncorrected and noted, but the cause lies in different places.

"Yamase" is a cold wind

The culm is short, somewhat shorter than Norin No.1's or Fujisaka No.5's. Panicle number is somewhat high. A skewed panicle-number type, not as many as Norin No.1 but more than Fujisaka No.5 or Rikuu No.132. Grain set is dense and shattering hard; the grain is somewhat large, larger than Fujisaka No.5's or Rikuu No.132's.

(Punctuation is missing in the last line of the original.)

"Yamase" is the name for the cold north-easterly wind of the Tohoku region (the document does not say so). The father, Fujisaka No.2, is from Aomori's Fujisaka lines, long used in breeding for cold tolerance.

But this document records nothing about cold tolerance. What a name seems to tell you and what the document says are two different things.

Sources disagree

How the seed parent of Norin No.1 is written

The two spellings appear in the same NARO database, in the pedigree field and in the historical document respectively. We use the pedigree field's spelling and list the other.

How Kamenoo No.4 is written

We follow the NARO database. The commonly seen spelling uses a katakana no; we prefer the spelling we can cite.

On naming

Variety names are proper nouns. We use a name in this language only where a published source for it can be cited; otherwise the Japanese name stands.

What we have not yet confirmed

We have not looked below the top twenty

The site covers the twenty most widely planted varieties of the 2024 crop and the varieties that connect them back to Koshihikari. Many descendants exist below that line; we have not yet verified them against primary sources.

The year Masshigura was crossed

Neither Aomori Prefecture's table of recommended-variety characteristics nor the NARO database gives the year Masshigura (Aokei No.138) was crossed. The cross itself, Ou No.341 / Yamagata No.40, and its adoption as a recommended variety in fiscal 2004 are confirmed from primary sources; the year of the cross is not. For the same reason we do not say which parent was the seed parent. On 8 October 2026 we went back to the breeder's own side. The Masshigura page in the variety database of the Aomori Prefectural Industrial Technology Research Center's Agriculture and Forestry Research Institute carries a heading reading “The origin of Masshigura” — with nothing under it. Of the institute's bulletins, only No.42 (2015) onward are online, and the issue that would hold the breeding report for Masshigura is not among them. So the year of the cross is absent from the breeder's own published material as well.
