Descendants
Relations are counted along the shortest line of descent. The rows in the diagram follow the order of crosses, so a variety with more than one path down can sit lower in the diagram than its relation here suggests.
The same parents again, thirteen years later
Kanto No.74 was crossed in 1954 at the Kanto-Tosan Agricultural Experiment Station (now the National Agricultural Experiment Station), taking "Norin No.23" as the mother and "Norin No.22" as the father; it was grown in bulk to F6 and in lines from F7 as selection and fixing were pursued
Mother Norin No.23, father Norin No.22. That combination is already on this site twice.
| Year of cross | Place | |
|---|---|---|
| Koganenami (Etsunan No.5) | 1941 | Konosu Testing Site |
| Yaeho (San'in No.47) | 1941 | Konosu Testing Site |
| Harukaze (Kanto No.74) | 1954 | Kanto-Tosan Agricultural Experiment Station |
Koganenami and Yaeho came out of one cross. Harukaze is a separate cross thirteen years later — with the mother and father the same way round.
The same two varieties, crossed again in another place in another year. A combination that worked gets repeated, and the record shows it plainly.
Its eating quality is judged against half siblings
The eating quality is sticky, and the mouthfeel and sweetness generally good; it exceeds Norin No.29 and Yamabiko and is reckoned about level with Yaeho.
Two of the three comparisons are kin.
- Yamabiko (Tokai No.7) — mother Norin No.22, so Harukaze's half sibling
- Yaeho (San'in No.47) — the same pair of parents, so a half sibling as well
"About level with Yaeho." It says its eating quality drew with what came out of the same combination thirteen years before.
An attachment the database does not hold
Kanto No.74's districts of adoption are as in the attached file (file name: Kanto No.74 districts of adoption); it spreads from the flat country into the mid-mountains and … about 3,000 ha is expected under it.
The content of the districts is left to an attached file. And that attached file is not in the database.
The historical documents are digitised paper reports, so when a separate sheet or a figure drops out, the text that points to it stays behind.
A gap in a source can show up as the shape of a character, as with Yamaseshirazu's unreadable one, or as here — a reference whose target is missing. Both are left uncorrected and noted.
Resistance to bacterial leaf blight is weak, at or below Yamabiko's. It is weak to brown spot too.
Quality and eating are called "extremely good", and in the same breath it is called weak to two diseases.

On naming
Variety names are proper nouns. We use a name in this language only where a published source for it can be cited; otherwise the Japanese name stands.
What we have not yet confirmed
We have not looked below the top twenty
The site covers the twenty most widely planted varieties of the 2024 crop and the varieties that connect them back to Koshihikari. Many descendants exist below that line; we have not yet verified them against primary sources.
The year Masshigura was crossed
Neither Aomori Prefecture's table of recommended-variety characteristics nor the NARO database gives the year Masshigura (Aokei No.138) was crossed. The cross itself, Ou No.341 / Yamagata No.40, and its adoption as a recommended variety in fiscal 2004 are confirmed from primary sources; the year of the cross is not. For the same reason we do not say which parent was the seed parent. On 8 October 2026 we went back to the breeder's own side. The Masshigura page in the variety database of the Aomori Prefectural Industrial Technology Research Center's Agriculture and Forestry Research Institute carries a heading reading “The origin of Masshigura” — with nothing under it. Of the institute's bulletins, only No.42 (2015) onward are online, and the issue that would hold the breeding report for Masshigura is not among them. So the year of the cross is absent from the breeder's own published material as well.
