Descendants
Relations are counted along the shortest line of descent. The rows in the diagram follow the order of crosses, so a variety with more than one path down can sit lower in the diagram than its relation here suggests.
It comes from the same cross as Yaeho
At the Konosu Testing Site of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry Agricultural Experiment Station, an artificial cross was made in 1941 taking "Kinki No.35" as the mother and "Kinki No.34" as the father
Yaeho's (Sanin No.47) historical document says:
At the Konosu Testing Site of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry Agricultural Experiment Station, an artificial cross was made in 1941 taking "Kinki No.35" (Norin No.23) as the mother and "Kinki No.34" (Norin No.22) as the father
The year, the place, the mother and the father are all the same. Koganenami and Yaeho are two lines out of one cross.
Kinki No.35 is Paddy Rice Norin No.23 and Kinki No.34 is Paddy Rice Norin No.22 — Koshihikari's mother. Neither has a digitised historical document, so neither has a page here.
The same pattern as the eleven lines in everything from the same cross as Koshihikari, occurring in a cross that used Norin No.22 as the father.
They were sent to completely different places
Out of one cross, the two went to different prefectures.
| Where it travelled | Prefecture that adopted it | |
|---|---|---|
| Etsunan No.5 Koganenami | Niigata → Fukui | Fukui |
| Sanin No.47 Yaeho | Shimane → Izumo → Shimane | Shimane |
Fukui and Shimane. The same seed was split and selected separately on different land.
The suited areas read differently too.
Etsunan No.5 is thought suited to the flat parts of Kanto-Tosan and the hill districts from Fukui southward.
Yaeho's document said "a late variety for the hill districts throughout and the mountain districts". Select in a different place and what comes out suits a different place.
The mother's beautiful ripening colour
It is strong against both leaf blast and panicle blast, at about the level of Norin No.22 and Norin No.23, and well adapted to late planting. Stem-maggot damage is also slight, and the ripening colour is particularly beautiful, like Norin No.22's.
"The ripening colour is particularly beautiful, like Norin No.22's."
What the document names as inherited from the father, Norin No.22, is the colour when ripe. In an age when inspection set the price by grade, appearance was a trait.
Somewhat long culm, medium tillering, a strong culm; grain set medium but the panicle long; filling good and shattering hard.
A strong culm. Norin No.22 was prone to lodging. That it did not inherit.

On naming
Variety names are proper nouns. We use a name in this language only where a published source for it can be cited; otherwise the Japanese name stands.
What we have not yet confirmed
We have not looked below the top twenty
The site covers the twenty most widely planted varieties of the 2024 crop and the varieties that connect them back to Koshihikari. Many descendants exist below that line; we have not yet verified them against primary sources.
The year Masshigura was crossed
Neither Aomori Prefecture's table of recommended-variety characteristics nor the NARO database gives the year Masshigura (Aokei No.138) was crossed. The cross itself, Ou No.341 / Yamagata No.40, and its adoption as a recommended variety in fiscal 2004 are confirmed from primary sources; the year of the cross is not. For the same reason we do not say which parent was the seed parent. On 8 October 2026 we went back to the breeder's own side. The Masshigura page in the variety database of the Aomori Prefectural Industrial Technology Research Center's Agriculture and Forestry Research Institute carries a heading reading “The origin of Masshigura” — with nothing under it. Of the institute's bulletins, only No.42 (2015) onward are online, and the issue that would hold the breeding report for Masshigura is not among them. So the year of the cross is absent from the breeder's own published material as well.
