Relations are counted along the shortest line of descent. The rows in the diagram follow the order of crosses, so a variety with more than one path down can sit lower in the diagram than its relation here suggests.

Two Norin numbers tied together in one sentence

At the Konosu Testing Site of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry Agricultural Experiment Station, an artificial cross was made in 1941 taking "Kinki No.35" (Norin No.23) as the mother and "Kinki No.34" (Norin No.22) as the father

Kinki No.35 = Norin No.23, and Kinki No.34 = Norin No.22. One sentence carries two pairs of line name and Norin number.

And Norin No.22 is written as the father. With Yamabiko, one of the few records that puts it there.

The mother, Kinki No.35, is also the mother of Tedoriwase. Tedoriwase's document says "Kinki No.35, later Norin No.23" — two documents saying the same thing.

The cross was in 1941; the fixing report is from 1955, at F14.

Weakness to one insect kept it off the hills

Shimane's reason for wanting it as a recommended variety begins not with the variety but with the land.

Norin No.23 is a mid-late panicle-number-type variety, of good quality and high yield, with strong resistance to blast, bacterial leaf blight and stem borer, somewhat lodging-resistant and well adapted to late planting; but its resistance to rice stem maggot and planthopper is weak. Consequently, although in terms of ripening it could be grown in the prefecture's mountain districts and is high yielding, it is at present mainly confined to the flats, with only a little cultivation seen in the hill districts.

Good quality, high yield, strong against disease. By its ripening it could grow on the hills. It stayed on the flats because it was weak to the rice stem maggot.

Since the main reason cultivation is confined to the flats is weak rice stem maggot resistance, a safe, high-yielding mid-late variety with strong rice stem maggot resistance is strongly wanted throughout the hill and mountain districts.

Yaeho is the answer.

Its rice stem maggot resistance belongs in the exceedingly strong class

Weakness to one insect had shut a variety's range into the lowland. To undo that, they rebuilt the mother's qualities with a different father.

Just like the mother, except against the insect

In heading date, maturity and habit it very closely resembles Norin No.23; the brown rice is somewhat large and of good quality. Yield differs little from Norin No.23's on the flats but is clearly higher in the hill districts.

No difference on the flats. Clearly more only in the hills.

That the aim was "the same as the mother, made strong against the insect, and taken up the hill" shows directly in the shape of the results.

On naming

Variety names are proper nouns. We use a name in this language only where a published source for it can be cited; otherwise the Japanese name stands.

What we have not yet confirmed

We have not looked below the top twenty

The site covers the twenty most widely planted varieties of the 2024 crop and the varieties that connect them back to Koshihikari. Many descendants exist below that line; we have not yet verified them against primary sources.

The year Masshigura was crossed

Neither Aomori Prefecture's table of recommended-variety characteristics nor the NARO database gives the year Masshigura (Aokei No.138) was crossed. The cross itself, Ou No.341 / Yamagata No.40, and its adoption as a recommended variety in fiscal 2004 are confirmed from primary sources; the year of the cross is not. For the same reason we do not say which parent was the seed parent. On 8 October 2026 we went back to the breeder's own side. The Masshigura page in the variety database of the Aomori Prefectural Industrial Technology Research Center's Agriculture and Forestry Research Institute carries a heading reading “The origin of Masshigura” — with nothing under it. Of the institute's bulletins, only No.42 (2015) onward are online, and the issue that would hold the breeding report for Masshigura is not among them. So the year of the cross is absent from the breeder's own published material as well.
