Chiyohikari

Parents: Chukyoasahi (seed parent) and Norin No.22 (pollen parent). Crossed in 1945. Bred by Tokai Branch, National Agricultural Experiment Station (cross) → MAF Anjo Agricultural Improvement Laboratory → "this station" (the document does not name it).

The diagram shows this variety's own parents and the line that connects it to Koshihikari. Among the descendants only the main varieties are drawn; the other parent of each cross, and every descendant not drawn here, are listed in full below. Faint boxes are unnamed breeding lines.

Descendants

Relations are counted along the shortest line of descent. The rows in the diagram follow the order of crosses, so a variety with more than one path down can sit lower in the diagram than its relation here suggests.

It loses in three years out of five

As to yield, compared with Norin No.8, it was superior in two of the past five years and inferior in three. It appears to be superior when the year's yields are generally high and inferior when they are not.

A breeding report writing about its own variety, saying it loses more often than it wins.

And it goes on to say there is a pattern to the losing. It wins in good years and loses in poor ones — meaning a variety that rises when conditions do.

Hiroshima Prefecture planned to adopt it as a recommended variety in 1957 all the same. Not for the yield.

In the general assessment of the trial plantings too, it was well received for its strong culm, disease resistance (blast especially) and good quality, and its resistance to the stem maggot also appears to be rated highly

Strong culm, disease resistance, good quality. Those three carried it.

The fifth document to write Norin No.22 as the father

Taking "Chukyoasahi" as the mother and "Paddy Rice Norin No.22" as the father, an artificial cross was made in 1945 at the Tokai Branch of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry Agricultural Experiment Station

Norin No.22 appears almost always on the mother's side on this site (Koshihikari included). Documents that name it as the father are Yaeho, Yamabiko, Chidori, Nikisakae — and this makes five.

The mother, Chukyoasahi, is a different variety from Kyoasahi, which appears on Hatsuminori's mother's side. One character apart, and easy to confuse when a pedigree is assembled from names.

"This station" is never named

In 1948 the F3 seed was distributed from that station to the Ministry's Anjo Agricultural Improvement Laboratory as test material for paddy rice breeding, selection and fixing were pursued there, and in April 1949 it was handed on to this station, where the work of selection and fixing continued

"This station." Meaning the place that wrote the document — but its name is not given.

Other documents supply the name as of the time of writing, in brackets: "now the MAF Kanto-Tosan Agricultural Experiment Station" (Natsuminori is the example). This one does not.

The line name Tokai No.6 and the Hiroshima context make it guessable, but what is not written is treated as not written. This site's breeding-site field reads "this station (the document does not name it)".

On naming

Variety names are proper nouns. We use a name in this language only where a published source for it can be cited; otherwise the Japanese name stands.

What we have not yet confirmed

We have not looked below the top twenty

The site covers the twenty most widely planted varieties of the 2024 crop and the varieties that connect them back to Koshihikari. Many descendants exist below that line; we have not yet verified them against primary sources.

The year Masshigura was crossed

Neither Aomori Prefecture's table of recommended-variety characteristics nor the NARO database gives the year Masshigura (Aokei No.138) was crossed. The cross itself, Ou No.341 / Yamagata No.40, and its adoption as a recommended variety in fiscal 2004 are confirmed from primary sources; the year of the cross is not. For the same reason we do not say which parent was the seed parent. On 8 October 2026 we went back to the breeder's own side. The Masshigura page in the variety database of the Aomori Prefectural Industrial Technology Research Center's Agriculture and Forestry Research Institute carries a heading reading “The origin of Masshigura” — with nothing under it. Of the institute's bulletins, only No.42 (2015) onward are online, and the issue that would hold the breeding report for Masshigura is not among them. So the year of the cross is absent from the breeder's own published material as well.
