The diagram shows this variety's own parents and the line that connects it to Koshihikari. Among the descendants only the main varieties are drawn; the other parent of each cross, and every descendant not drawn here, are listed in full below. Faint boxes are unnamed breeding lines.

Descendants

Relations are counted along the shortest line of descent. The rows in the diagram follow the order of crosses, so a variety with more than one path down can sit lower in the diagram than its relation here suggests.

The one variety in the top twenty that is not of Koshihikari's family

Of the varieties in the top twenty by share of planted area in the 2024 crop, nineteen are Koshihikari or its descendants. The remaining one is Hatsushimo.

NARO's document on its origins contains one sentence on the cross.

"Higashiyama No.50" was produced at the Konosu testing site of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry's Agricultural Experiment Station by a hand cross made in Showa 10 with "Higashiyama No.24" as the seed parent and "Kinki No.15" as the pollen parent

Showa 10, 1935. Nine years before the Koshihikari cross of 1944. That it is not a descendant follows: it is older than Koshihikari in the first place.

Even so, the blood is connected

The pollen parent Kinki No.15 is paddy rice Norin No.8. And this Norin No.8 is the seed parent of paddy rice Norin No.22, which is the seed parent of Koshihikari.

So Hatsushimo and Koshihikari hold Norin No.8 as a common ancestor. They are not parent and child; they stand in something like the position of cousins.

Further, Hatsushimo became a parent of Aichinokaori. Aichinokaori is the seed parent of Asahinoyume. Hatsushimo's blood is inside the top twenty varieties too.

The cross was not in Gifu

Hatsushimo is known as a variety representative of Gifu Prefecture, but the cross was carried out at Konosu in Saitama Prefecture. Gifu Prefecture's document says the same thing.

Line breeding at the Gifu Prefectural Agricultural Experiment Station for the nine years from Showa 13 to Showa 21

The cross at a national station, the selection in Gifu Prefecture. A variety made by dividing the work.

In Showa 18, seed was distributed to the relevant prefectures and to other prefectures under the line name "Higashiyama No.50" Furthermore, in "Aichi Prefecture" and "Gifu Prefecture" it was decided to adopt it as a recommended variety from fiscal Showa 25.

The assessment in the document on its origins:

Medium culm, medium tillering, with somewhat long panicles; grain shape medium-large; high-yielding and extremely good quality.

Share of paddy rice area in the 2024 crop: 0.7%. Within Gifu Prefecture it is first in planted area, but it is barely grown in other prefectures.

On naming

Variety names are proper nouns. We use a name in this language only where a published source for it can be cited; otherwise the Japanese name stands.

What we have not yet confirmed

We have not looked below the top twenty

The site covers the twenty most widely planted varieties of the 2024 crop and the varieties that connect them back to Koshihikari. Many descendants exist below that line; we have not yet verified them against primary sources.

The year Masshigura was crossed

Neither Aomori Prefecture's table of recommended-variety characteristics nor the NARO database gives the year Masshigura (Aokei No.138) was crossed. The cross itself, Ou No.341 / Yamagata No.40, and its adoption as a recommended variety in fiscal 2004 are confirmed from primary sources; the year of the cross is not. For the same reason we do not say which parent was the seed parent. On 8 October 2026 we went back to the breeder's own side. The Masshigura page in the variety database of the Aomori Prefectural Industrial Technology Research Center's Agriculture and Forestry Research Institute carries a heading reading “The origin of Masshigura” — with nothing under it. Of the institute's bulletins, only No.42 (2015) onward are online, and the issue that would hold the breeding report for Masshigura is not among them. So the year of the cross is absent from the breeder's own published material as well.
